Measuring Dogs

Neck (all harnesses)

Measure from just ahead of the withers at the base of the neck to the top of the breastbone, then double this measurement. Work the tape under the fur, pull it snug, but not stretched. Measure the dog, not the fur! Measure only one side of the dog then double the measurement. Wrapping the tape measure all the way around the neck may distort the measurement. Neck fit is critical. When properly fitted, where the webbing crosses at the "Y" below the neck, the webbing should cross right on the breastbone. At the same time you are holding the webbing in place on the breastbone, check to see that the webbing in the "Y" at the top of the neck, crosses where the neck joins the withers (shoulder blades). Tail (x-back, recreation, split-chest)

Start tape at top of breastbone. Pass between front legs, then up around the rib cage to base of tail. Lift tail to feel join. Check fit of tail length by pulling on webbing to see if the webbing will come to the base of the tail. Webbing should not come to the base of the tail unless there is tension against it. The more coat the dog has, the more tension is required.

Rib (siwash cart, freight, yukon)

Start tape at top of breastbone, pass between front legs, then straight back to last rib.

Rear (freight, yukon)

Start tape at top of breastbone, pass between front legs, then to back of thigh (position of spreader bar).

General Harness Information

• Quantity Discounts
  Discounts apply to any assortment of harness size/style. 6-12 harnesses are 10% off; 13-25 harnesses are 15% off; and 26+ harnesses are 20% off.
• Neck Design
  The padded neck fits snugly around the dogs shoulders, distributing the force evenly. The basic design is hundreds of years old, but improved by modern materials. Harness neck size must fit correctly. Too large, and the harness will slip, rub, or interfere with movement; too small, and it will cut, bruise, or choke.
• Harness Care
  Do not store where continually wet. Try to prevent freezing. Do not dry over a fire or stove; they will shrink up to 10% or more. Wash in lukewarm or cold water and hang to drip dry. DO NOT USE A CLOTHES DRYER!
• Padding
  Harness padding does two things: 1.) it keeps the webbing from cutting or chafing your dog, and 2.) it provides some cushion to prevent bruising. Types of padding are below.
  • Type N (Super Plush)
    Synthetic pile if furry nap with woven backing, good cushion, wears well, doesn't pill, machine washable.
  • Type F (Polar Fleece – PolarTec 300®
    Quick-drying Dacron polyester synthetic, good insulator because it holds a lot of air, resists water absorption, machine washable.
  • Type P (Neoprene)
    Closed-cell foam, with nylon sheathing, virtually indestructible padding that provides extra cushion for heavy pulling. Resists water absorption, resists freezing to approximately -30° F even if wet. Machine washable.
  • Type S (Sheepskin)
    Padding offers extra cushion and protection—particularly when the temperature drops below zero. While not guaranteed machine-washable, the thick sheepskin wool retains enough lanolin and other oils to protect it, and cause it to age by curling around the edge of the webbing. It wears extremely well. Particularly suitable for short-coated dogs. SHEEPSKIN PADDED HARNESSES ARE NOT RETURNABLE.
  Colors — 1" Medium weight harness webbing – red, royal, black, navy, light blue, turquoise, green, teal, florescent green, purple, burgundy, florescent pink, florescent orange, yellow and silver.
  Materials — Webbing quality 1" nylon web, tested to exceed 2000 lb. force, with a special weave that spreads the load over the full width of the web.

Measure the chest slightly below your underarm, around the fullest part of your chest and back circumference.
Measure the sleeve from the middle of the back of your neck to the wrist with the elbow slightly bent.
Measure the waist circumference loosely from wherever you like to wear your pants.
Measure the pants by taking the pant that you like the length of and measure from the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
Measure the sock by using your shoe size to determine what size sock to choose. (U.S. measurements.) We have found that Men's Large will fit most men's feet including smaller sizes.
